The Love Dilemma
The Hero’s Journey to Authenticity
A forthcoming book
For years, I searched for the answer to a perplexing question that significantly shaped my own life:
Why do we get in our own way?
That search led me through psychology, mythology, neuroscience, contemplative traditions, and thousands of hours of honest self-inquiry. Eventually, I realized that beneath our striving, our anxiety, and our endless search for reassurance lies a deeper tension.
I call it The Love Dilemma.
The Love Dilemma is the persistent tension between our deep biological need for love and our fear that we may not be worthy of it. It is this tension, I believe, that gives rise to the ego, not as a character flaw or an enemy to be defeated, but as a brilliant survival strategy designed to secure the love and safety our nervous systems believe we need.
Like the ancient labyrinth, we spend much of our lives wandering through identities we have constructed to earn acceptance, approval, and belonging. Achievement, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and control are among the strategies we employ in search of relief from that tension. Yet they often leave us feeling farther from ourselves, and they do nothing to quiet the underlying fear.
The Hero's Journey, I believe, is not a journey outward toward becoming extraordinary.
It is the journey back through the labyrinth.
Back to the person we were before fear convinced us we had to become someone else in order to be loved, accepted, and worthy of the life we desire.
The Love Dilemma: The Hero's Journey to Authenticity explores that journey and offers a compassionate framework for understanding why we suffer, why reassurance never lasts, and what becomes possible when we begin organizing our lives around authenticity and love instead of fear.
The manuscript is currently seeking publication.
In the meantime, many of the ideas that shaped the book are explored in my essays on Substack and inform every coaching conversation I have.
